NONAQUEOUS ELECTROLYTE SECONDARY BATTERY

PURPOSE:To heighten the capacity of a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery and extend the cycle life of the battery by bringing lithium metal equal to 20 to 150% of the amount of lithium stored in a carbonaceous material into electrical contact with the carbonaceous material, and storing the lithium metal in a container. CONSTITUTION:A negative electrode 6 having a carbonaceous material that stores and releases lithium and a positive electrode 4 made of a compound containing lithium are used. Lithium metal equal to 20 to 150% of the amount of lithium stored in the carbonaceous material is brought into electrical contact with the carbonaceous material and stored in a container 1. Then the amount of lithium which is lost at the early stage of charge and discharge can be supplied and so the capacity of the battery can stably be heightened from the early stage of the cycle of charge and discharge and also the cycle life of the battery can be enhanced.
