The invention comprises alcohol-soluble colour salts comprising a dyestuff anion moiety which is the anion of a Cr or Co complex of an at least tridentate complex-forming azo dyestuff, which contains no groups which dissociate acid in water and do not take part in the complex formation, and an ammonium alkyl-polyalkyl-polyhydrophenanthrene. Preferred anionic Cr or Co compounds for use in the above process are those containing per Cr or Co atom either two tridentate complex-forming azo dyestuff molecules or one molecule of a more than tridentate complex-forming azo dyestuff, e.g. a tetradentate-complexing azo dyestuff, preferably in combination with one bidentate ligand free from chromophoric groups. Preferred amino-alkyl-polyalkyl-polyhydrophenanthrenes are dehydro-, dihydro- and tetrahydro-abietylamine. Examples are given for the production of the salts. Printing inks are formed from the alcohol-soluble colour salts by mixing them with oxygen-containing polar organic solvents such as alcohols, ethers, ketones, esters or halogenated hydrocarbons together with conventional additives such as wetting-agents and polyethylene wax anti-blocking agent. An Example (43) is given in which a colour salt is mixed with shellac, dibutyl phthalate and ethanol. |
