Catalysts for the hydrogenation of hydrocarbons or organic cpds. contg. nitrile, carbonyl or aromatic, acetylenic or olefinic bonds, are made by impregnating a support consisting of oxides of metals of groups II, III, or IV, and with at least 0.1 millimole of OH groups, with a hot aqs soln. of transition metal salts, treating the impregnated support at least 260 degrees C to eliminate liquid and O2, and then activating the metal complex by treating it with an organo metallic compound of formula QRn (where Q is a metal from groups I, II, or III; R is H, alkyl, aryl, alkylaryl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl of 2OC; n is 1-3 and is the valency of Q.) The complex is then heated to at least 149 degrees C in a current of H2. |
