1309280 Electrical connector tool BURNDY CORP 20 Nov 1970 [24 Nov 1969] 55279/70 Heading B4W [Also in Division H2] A tool for inserting a wired contact member 11 into a connector body C and for testing the effectiveness of the insertion has two grippers 30 with jaws 33, the grippers are biased apart by a spring 32 and connected to a body T by a tension spring 35. The grippers are normally held together by levers 25 which coact therewith via surfaces 49 engaging surfaces 44, the rotational position of the levers being determined by a cam block 29, via pins 27 and slots 28. The levers 25 are biased by a spring 40. In operation, buttons 50 are pressed inwardly so that firstly cam block 29 is moved rearwardly to open levers 25 and allow jaws 33 to move apart, then secondly (camming element 5) is moved forwardly so that tip holders 20 and tips 23 are moved apart, Fig. 10. A contact and wire W are then positioned in the tool and the buttons released. The tool is then used to position the contact in a connector body. On rearward movement of the tool away from the connector body there occurs relative movement between the grippers 30 and the tool body T. This is due to jaws 33 still gripping wire W and this relative movement produces a pull on the wire which checks if the contact is correctly and firmly positioned in the connector body C. Further movement rearwardly of the tool body causes levers 25 to move to a position where surfaces 49 no longer engage grippers 30 whereupon the jaws 33 are forced apart by spring 32. Movement of buttons 50 inwardly will move the tip holders apart and allow wire W to be removed from the tool and also reposition the grippers 30 and levers 25 into their starting positions. A sighting piece may be applied to the tool for effectively lining up the wire W relative to the tool, Fig. 15 (not shown). |
