In the manufacture of radial ply tyres, the carcass is built by helically winding a strip of cord fabric on a cylindrical drum, the fabric being of constant width and formed of rubberized cords extending transversely substantially at 90 degrees with respect to the longitudinal direction of the strip. In a typical example, a strip of cord fabric is helically wound three times around a drum, cut, and the staggered edges of the strip are turned up and over bead wires located at the side edges of the drum. The carcass is then shaped, the side walls, breaker, and tread are placed thereon, and the green tyre is vulcanized in a mould. In a modification an additional strip of cord fabric may be hellically wound over the first strip, cut, and its edges turned down and under the bead wires. |
