Aromatic hydroxycarboxylic acids and their salts with Group IA or IIA metals are prepared by reacting (i) phenol unsubstituted in at least one of the 2-, 4- and 6-positions, (ii) 1-naphthol unsubstituted in at least one of the 2-, 4-, 5- and 7-positions or (iii) 2-naphthol unsubstituted in at least one of the 1-, 3-, 6- and 8-positions (in which (i), (ii) and (iii) may be used in the form of their Group IA or IIA metal salts, and are optionally halogen-, OH-, alkoxy-, alkyl-, amino-, aryl- or carboxyl-substituted) with a Group IA or IIA metal carbonate, aliphatic monocarboxylate and/or aliphatic dicarboxylate, and with CO, and if desired acidifying the salt produced to give the corresponding acid. In a modification, when a Group IA or IIA metal formate is used, the reaction is effected in absence of CO. |
