A roller electrode for resistance welding machines with wire electrodes comprises a stator including two shaft sections 1, 2 and a rotor including two sections 9, 10 mounted for rotation about the stator, the stator and rotor being electrically interconnected by a conducting liquid, e.g. mercury, contained in a self-contained liquid system within the roller electrode, and expansion space for the liquid. The expansion space, which may be in the form of cavities 39 regularly spaced on the circumference of the rotor, communicate via a channel 41 with a gap 37 between the rotor and a flange portion of the stator, the bearings mounting the stator within the rotor being sealed against the entry of mercury. The stator is provided with coolant passages 7, 8, which, when the roller electrode is mounted by means of the ends of the sections 1, 2 on the machine bracket 3, connect with passages in the bracket. Current is supplied to the roller electrode via the bracket. In a modification (Figs. 2, 3, not shown), the expansion space is constituted by two bores (63, 64) in the stator. |
