[Also in Division B8] A chuck adapted to hold a toothed workpiece, e.g. a gear 26, and to be loaded therewith while rotating includes a plurality of jaw members 18 arranged to move into and out of clamping engagement with the teeth of the workpiece and a clutch device, preferably associated with each jaw member, including a radially yieldable rounded nosed member 64 in front of the jaw member and adapted yieldably to engage the teeth of the workpiece during its insertion into the jaws of the chuck to accelerate and synchronize the workpiece with the chuck jaws. The chuck is of the diaphragm type operated by a fluid pressure operated plunger (not shown) and includes an ejector 84 which is rotatable with the chuck and which in its forward position contacts and initiates rotation of a fresh workpiece fed towards the chuck on an arbor 50 associated, e.g. with a tailstock 54. In its retracted position the ejector acts as an end stop for the workpiece. Workpieces are supplied to the arbor 50 from a vertical stack in a loading shoot 34, a fluid-pressure operated plunger 45 being arranged on retraction to release workpieces singly on to a rest 52 and on forward movement to lift the bottom workpiece and the remaining stack thereabove out of contact with the released workpiece. |
