In a slow wave structure for a backward wave travelling wave tube comprising a plurality of partitions 12 extending transversely across a circular waveguide 11 to define coupled cavities, the bandwidth is increased by providing at least one pair of rods 18 connected to alternate partitions. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 4, the partitions are provided with kidney shaped coupling slots 14 and the rods 18 pass alternately through a coupling slot 14 and a narrow aperture 19 to provide conductive connections between alternate partitions. In a modification, Fig. 7 (not shown) coupling loops are provided in each coupling slot 14 to provide additional coupling between adjacent cavities. The rods 18 need not pass through coupling slots but may pass through special circular apertures in alternate partitions (Fig. 5, not shown), and this arrangement is also used when the coupling between adjacent cavities is mainly through coupling loops extending through small apertures in the partitions (Fig. 6, not shown). The rods 18 are shown as of circular crosssection but may be of other shapes and may be hollow so that coolant may be circulated through them. |
