Components having an elongated stem of magnetizable material and an enlarged head at one end of the stem are removed from apertures in a carrier by means of apparatus comprising an electromagnet which lifts the components so that their heads enter slots in a first member along which they are moved until the stems of the components enter slots in a second member. As shown in the exploded view of the apparatus, Fig. 2, semi-conductor diode housing assemblies 5, each comprising a dumet wire sealed into one end of a glass or metal tube, are brought up in a carrier 1 having an array of apertures 4 through which the wires of the components 5 are threaded. The carrier is guided by end members 25 to a position below a first member 10 the lower face of which is provided with slots 11 aligned with the rows of apertures in the carrier. An electromagnet 30 positioned above member 10 is energized and lifts the components 5 so that their heads enter the slots 11 while their stems still extend into the apertures 4 in the carrier 1. The carrier 1 is then moved so that the heads of the components slide along the slots 11 until the stems of the components enter slots 15 in a second member 12. The electromagnet 30 is then deenergized and the carrier 1 is removed downwardly, the components being supported by member 12 since the slots 15 are narrower than the heads of the components 5. The member 12 is mounted at an angle to the horizontal so that the released components slide under gravity until they enter slots 27 in a second carrier 26 which is removed from the machine when filled. |
