1,273,993. Amalgam-forming cells for brine electrolysis. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A. G. Sept. 5, 1969 [Sept. 21, 1968], No. 43968/69. Heading C7B. Energy is recovered from the decomposition of amalgam in the electrolysis of alkali metal chlorides, in which the amalgam-forming cell and a current-recovering amalgam-decomposition cell are connected in series (so that voltages are directed oppositely), by periodically operating the amalgam-decomposition cell and only connecting it into the circuit when the concentration of sodium in the amalgam is greater than 0À01% by wt. The sodium concentration may be monitored and a control mechanism, e.g. two time switches for determining "on" and "off" periods respectively, only activated to switch this cell out of the circuit when the concentration falls to a predetermined limiting value of 0À01-0À05% by wt. |
