<p>Lubricating oil is retained better on metal surfaces if they are scored with an interlocking network of grooves. A cylindrical object is rotated at a uniform speed while a hardened steel ball is pressed against the surface, at the same time being moved slowly parallel to the cylinder axis and also in another manner as follows: backwards and forwards along the axis; backwards and forwards about an axis at right angles to the cylinder axis; rotation about an axis that cuts the cylinder axis. The ends of cylinders and also flat work pieces can be similarly treated. Uses should be found in the production of bearings and parts for i.c. engines.</p> |
