Process for fermenting garbage and organic refuse of vegetable origin comprises (A) rapid aerobic alcoholic fermentation by homogenising the materials, adjusting the water content to 25-50% wt. and to pH 2.5-4 by adding mineral acid and aerating; (B) a conditioning stage in which, when alcoholic fermentation has been induced, aeration is stopped, the interior of the mass is insulated from ambient air, the water content adjusted to 40-80% wt. and to pH 7-8 by adding alkali, thus gradually establishing anaerobic conditions; (C) slow hydrogenated fermentation, still anaerobic and without addition of water, in which nitrogenous products are added, and the mass left to stand. Advantages include shorter time, cheaper, less unpleasant, less risk of fire, aseptic at all stages, and produces a material rich in humus and nitrogen.
|
