1367914 Alkaline primary cell VARTA BATTERIE AG 3 Sept 1971 [4 Sept 1970] 41277/71 Heading H1B A cell comprises a nickel-plated steel can 1 containing depolarizer masses 3 comprising MnO 2 , carbon, and polystyrene acting as a swelling agent. The separator comprises a finely porous support tube 4 of synthetic resin surrounded by an absorbent wrapping 5 of cotton fibre or cellulose. Amalgamated zinc paste 8 fills the space between the separator and a tubular negative current collector 6 formed of brass gauze. An absorbent body 10 of cotton fibre within the tube 6 serves to receive the ZnO formed during operation of the cell so that an active zinc surface is always available for the electrochemical reaction. KOH electrolyte is absorbed in the separator. A base-plate 7 of plastics material is fused to the bottom of the tube 6 and the cell is sealed by a polyamide ring 11 and steel cover 12 nickel plated on its outer surface and copper plated on its inner surface. The KOH concentration of the electrolyte is 26%-34% and the ratio by weight of amalgamated zinc to electrolyte is from 1 : 1À2 to 1 : 1À4. |
