1299147 Separating blood solids SYBRON CORP 11 June 1971 [20 July 1970] 27541/71 Heading A2U [Also in Division B2] A process for separating blood solids from a liquid, e.g. animal blood, mixtures of blood from different animals, blood diluted with water, or liquid blood fractions such as the serum and haemoglobin fractions produced by centrifuging blood, consists in passing the liquid into a vessel wherein it is maintained at a pressure, e.g. of 15 to 45 p.s.i.g., heating it by steam injection to a temperature above 190‹F but below its boiling point at the pressure involved, e.g. a temperature in the range 220 to 260‹F, retaining it in the vessel for at least 5 sees whereby the blood solids are coagulated, and discharging it through a pressure reducer to a separator. The separated solids, in the form of small wet flakes, may subsequently be dried in a rotary drum and collected in a cyclone. In apparatus for carrying out the process the liquid is pumped to an inlet 9 of a centrifugal scroll-type separator 5 through a pipe (not shown) constituting the pressure vessel and provided with inlets for steam and a back-pressure valve. The separator comprises a bowl 6 and a scroll rotor 7 driven at a slightly higher speed than the bowl. The coagulated blood solids are centrifuged to the wall of the bowl where they are conveyed by the scroll to an outlet 12, whilst the liquid flows past a regulating ring 13 to enter a pumping chamber 14 for discharge at 15. |
