Soil fertility is increased by the addition of one or more aminopolycarboxylic acid nitriles, e.g. nitrilotriacetonitrile, ethylene diamine tetraacetonitrile and/or diethylene triamine pentaacetonitrile, suitably in granular or bead form. Optional ingredients are other plant nutrients, trace elements, Thomas phosphate slag and silicon dioxide. In the soil, the nitriles are slowly hydrolysed to water-soluble salts which form chelate-complexes with insoluble substances in the soil.
