C. timing motor for a clock or watch, and including an electromagnetically driven rotor 18, a stator 11, a motor winding 16, a D.C. source 26, and a mechanical resonator 20, an electromagnetic system, including pick-up coils 23a-d co-operating with magnets 22a-d carried by the resonator 20 supplies signals to an amplifier circuit for the pulse energization of the motor winding 16, the rotor 18 and the resonator 20 are coupled magnetically to excite the resonator into resonance when the motor turns at a desired speed and to maintain the rotor speed constant, and the pick-up coils are isolated from the rotor 18 to preclude operation of the motor by rotor induced signals. The resonator 20 is cruciform, each pair of diametrically opposed arms oscillating in a direction opposite to the other such pair. The magnetic coupling between the rotor 18 and the resonator 20, is provided by magnets 19 on the rotor co-operating with magnets 22a<SP>1</SP> (not shown), 22b<SP>1</SP>, 22c<SP>1</SP>, 22d<SP>1</SP> on the resonator. The amplifier circuit comprises transistors 35, 36 in series with the motor coil 16, the transistor 35 receiving signals from a pick-up coil 32a associated with the rotor magnets 19, and the transistor 36 receiving signals from the pick-up coils 23a-d. A bias resistor 37 renders the motor self-starting. The cruciform resonator 20 may be replaced by a tuning fork or a balance wheel.
