PURPOSE:To improve the reliability of a magnetic recording medium by forming a protective layer contg. an ester lubricant hard to hydrolyze on the recording medium with a thin ferromagnetic metal film. CONSTITUTION:A layer contg. an ester lubricant having a lower rate of hydrolysis than n-butyl stearate is formed on the surface of a thin ferromagnetic metal film formed on a nonmagnetic substrate. The ester lubricant can be synthesized from tert. carboxylic acid and alcohol having two or more fluorine groups. The tert. carboxylic acid may be 2-isopropyl-2,3-dimethylbutanoic acid, 2- ethyl-2,3,3-trimethylbutanoic acid or 2,2,4,4-tetramethylpentanoic acid. The reliability of the resulting recording medium is improved, drop-out is reduced and a head is not contaminated. |
