An aminophenol (preferably m-), a solvent and a catalyst (e.g. Pt, Pd, Ni) placed in a reactor and acetaldehyde is fed thereto under pressurised hydrogen at a temperature of up to 150 DEG C to produce an N,N-diethylaminophenol, and the catalyst is removed. The reaction mixture is then distilled while the bottom temperature is kept at not above 160 DEG C to substantially remove unreacted acetaldehyde and solvent; the residual bottom fraction is further distilled at not above 200 DEG C. The crude distillate is contacted under an inert gas and with stirring, with a solvent (e.g. water or an aliphatic hydrocarbon) substantially immiscible with the diethylaminophenol containing an acid sulfite or a dithionite in an amount of 0.1 to 10% of the product, batchwise or continuously. The mixture is cooled to precipitate the product as crystals which are recovered. The N,N-diethylaminophenol is obtained in good yield as a pale yellowish white or pale red solid which does not discolor over a period of time.
|
