1344234 Fractional distillation VARTA AG 10 March 1972 [22 March 1971] 11303/72 Heading B1B A liquid mixture is separated into two fractions by passing it at point 9 into a body 1 having interconnecting pores, some of which are fine (e.g. radius 0.2 to 5Á) and others are coarse (radius 30 to 400Á), and pumping a gas through the porous body whereby the gas leaving the body contains vapours of the more volatile component(s) of the liquid mixture. The pressure and temperature are maintained so that where the body is lyophilic, the liquid mixture enters the finer pores and where the body is lyophobic, the liquid mixture enters the coarser pores. The vapours are condensed in cooler K, and a portion of the condensate may be recycled to the porous body at point 6. The components of the mixture having higher boilling point are withdrawn at 7. The pressure range of the carrier gas is ascertained by a specified mathematical formula. Upper and lower fine-pored covering layers 2 and 3 rest directly against the porous body 1. If the liquid mixture does not wet the porous body, then a carrier gas is not required, and the body is maintained at a temperature such that vapours of the more volatile component(s) are formed. The use of metal and of carbon porous bodies is mentioned. |
