[Also in Division B2] A formable sheet material comprises a fabric which has a percentage elongation at failure that increases with increasing temperature to a maximum at a certain temperature and a polymeric coating on one side of the fabric, the polymeric coating having a percentage elongation at failure that decreases with increasing temperature to a minimum at a certain temperature and increases with increasing temperature beyond that certain temperature, the temperature at which maximum percentage elongation of the fabric occurs being within 50‹ F. of the temperature at which minimum percentage elongation of the polymeric coating occurs. The coating may be calendered into a sheet, adhesives applied to either sheet or fabric and then the sheet laminated to the fabric. A surface pattern can be embossed in the coating before, during or after laminating. The fabrics may be woven, knitted or tangled and may comprise natural or synthetic fibres. Fabrics mentioned include those made from acrylonitrile, polyamides, polyolefins such as polyethylene and polypropylene, polyesters such as the esters of a dihydric alcohol and terephthalic acid, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride and polyurethane fibres. Coatings mentioned are blends of a polyvinyl material with an interpolymer of acrylonitrile, butadiene and styrene. The polyvinyl material may be polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl acetate and polyvinyl alcohol. Adhesives mentioned are a terpolymer of vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate and maleic acid blended with a plasticizer and a stabilizer, and the plastisols and the isocyanatevinyl copolymer adhesive disclosed in the United States Specification 3,067,085.</p> |
