Seawater sludge is oxidised with air to convert Fe into Fe hydroxide, and then with pref. H2S contg. natural gas to convert the non-ferrous metals into sulphides. The solids are sepd. from the salt water and leached in two stages (a), with HCl soln contg. alkali metal-, alkaline earth-, and Zn chloride and (b) passing a Cl2-air mixt. through the soln. to dissolve the non-ferrous metals under liberation of H2S, CO2 and elemental S. This S is sepd. continuously by the flotation action of the Cl-air mixt.
