Compressive force applied across the two parallel faces 2, 3 of a block of solid (or laminated) magneto-strictive material is measured by the change in inductance of a winding 8 housed in a series of equally-spaced bores through the block. The bores run at right angles to the direction of the applied force. A pair of these transducers form two arms of an A.C. bridge to measure the inductance change. One of the pair may be unloaded and used to compensate for change in temperature &c., or the pair may measure forces in opposite directions, e.g. the thrust on a propeller shaft. A number of series-connected transducers may be used to support a container, Fig. 2 (not shown) so as to indicate its weight. |
