The superconductor is welded under pressure to the normal conductor. the pressure for welding is obtained by explosive force. To ensure a sound, joint, the superconductor and/or the normal conductor are first roughened and cleaned. This prevents poor welding due to corrosion or grease. As material for the super-conductor, Niobium or Niobium alloys are normally used, while for the normal conductor, copper or aluminium are used. Both materials are used in sheet form, so that the end-material can be cut into strips. After welding, the super conductor is usually cold rolled in stages with stress relieving cycles.
