An electric guitar or similar instrument is designed to fold at the mid point to allow ease of carriage. The throat section (2) of the guitar is designed to pivot about a centre (3) on the main body (1). A pinion gear (11) is in mesh with a rack (13) within the base. The rack is coupled to a similar one (12) over a bar (13). The strings are supported over two rollers (5, 8) that rotate when the throat is folded (2'). This ensures that the strings are not subjected to undue loads.
