Gas shielded arc welding process - using shield gas mixt. of inert gas and halo:brominated hydrocarbon to reduce ozone formation

In a gas shielded arc welding process, the shielding gas consists of a mixt. of an inert gas and 1250 ppm. of a halogenobrominated hydrocarbon (I) which decomposes to provide halogen atoms. Pref. (I) is of the formula R3CBr (where R is halogen), esp. trifluorobromomethane. (I) liberates bromine which is effective in destruction of ozone around the arc, and does not form toxic by-product such as phosgene-type derivatives.
