The independent wheel drive is universal in its application to one or more wheels of an electric vehicle, whether at the front or rear, by virtue of its simple, inexpensive and very compact construction with its high power transmission efficiency. The exchangeable motor (1) is mounted on one side of a lightweight profiled supporting element (7), while the driving wheel (13) is mounted on the other side. A single-stage direct transmission with a high reduction ratio is formed by a pinion (3) seated on the motor shaft and by a gear ring (4) integrated into the wheel rim. The supporting element simultaneously forms a protective cover for the gear ring. For uniform and quiet running, it is preferable to use a helical gear ring made of plastic. The independent wheel drive can be secured on the vehicle chassis by means of a simple, adjustable suspension device with an exchangeable rubber cushion. A large ground clearance is achieved. <IMAGE>
