APPARATUS FOR PRODUCING BASE MATERIAL FOR OPTICAL FIBER

PURPOSE:To permit easy production of a fully synthesized large bore glass rod with simple construction by providing a sintering part communicating with a soot synthesiz ing part below said synthesizing part and alternately repeating external depositing of soot and sintering between the soot synthesizing part and the sintering part. CONSTITUTION:The sintering part 20 is communicated with and connected to the lower side of the soot synthesizing part 10 and consists of a heat resistant sintering vessel 23 made of quartz having a sintering gas supply hole 21 in the lower part and a sintering gas discharge hole 22 in the upper part and an electric furnace body 25 which contains a ring heater 24 enclosing the vessel 23 in the middle part. A target driving part 30 is provided with a rotating function to rotate a target 31 and a lifting mechanism to reiteratively lift the target 31. The target 31 is rotated and the soot for a core or clad is uniformly deposited or externally deposited on the target 31 in the soot synthesizing part 10. A soot base material 42 prior to sintering is uniformly sintered in the sintering part 20. The target is otherwise lifted back and forth to alternately move the soot base material 41 to be formed in the soot synthesizing part 10 to the sintering part 20 and the glass rod 40 sintered in the sintering part 20 to the soot synthesizing part 10.
