A cover assembly (14) for an airbag restraint (38) has a smooth cover (18) and a load bearing insert (24) for concealing an airbag restraint system (16) having a housing (36), an airbag (38) and a gas generator (40) which includes an inflatant for inflating the airbag (38) for deploying the airbag (38) through the smooth outer cover member (18). The outer cover member (18) has weakened sections (20) on the inboard surface and filler material (22) is disposed against the cover member (18) to prevent inward collapse of the outer cover member (18) at the weakened sections (20). An insert (24) is formed in situ of the filler material (22) in an opening in a restraint member and the insert (24) is engaged during initial inflation of the airbag (38) to displace the filler material (22) so as to stress the outer cover member (18) at the weakened sections (20) thereof for separating a hidden door segment (44) from the cover member (18) as the airbag (38) is inflated and solely in response to such inflation prior to deployment of the airbag (38) into the passenger compartment.
