The road vehicle has a forward looking stereo camera (1), a radar system (2) to detect obstructions or other vehicles and a vehicle speed detector (3). In addition there is a steering wheel angle sensor (4), a brake switch (5), accelerator pedal switch (6) and a drive switch (7). All sensors provide inputs to a control unit (10). The controller provides automatic control of the speed in relation to the distance to a vehicle in front and also to relative speeds.
