PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve both the homogeneous combustion and stratified combustion in a cylinder injection type spark ignition internal combustion engine performing the stratified combustion and the homogeneous combustion alternately by generating strong intake air flow inside a cylinder in the air intake process during the homogeneous combustion while preventing generation of such strong intake air flow in the cylinder during the stratified combustion. SOLUTION: The internal combustion engine has opening area varying means 9 and 10 for varying the substantial area of the opening inside a cylinder as an intake port. The substantial area of the opening inside the cylinder is increased nearly to the largest by the opening area varying means during the stratified combustion, and the substantial area of the opening inside the cylinder is reduced to a set area by the opening area varying means during the homogeneous combustion.
