The network passes optical signals via a first data connection between nodes via intermediate nodes. To establish a second data connection functioning at least partly as a replacement for a failed first connection a third node sends a signaling signal to a fourth node containing a parameter determined by the third node and on the basis of which it is determined whether the fourth node is responsible for establishing the second data connection. The network passes optical signals via a first data connection between first and second node devices via several intermediate node devices. In order to establish a second data connection functioning at least partly as a replacement for a failed first connection a third node device sends a signaling signal to a fourth node device containing a parameter determined by the third node device and on the basis of which it is determined whether the fourth node device is responsible for establishing the second data connection or not.
