PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide both a vertical type self-combusting carbonization furnace regulable to a required carbonizing temperature, stabilizing the product quality, detecting the top surface level of a raw material layer, supplying a raw material or cutting out a carbonized material and thereby saving labor and a method for operating the carbonization furnace. SOLUTION: This vertical type self-combusting carbonization furnace 1 is characterized by arranging a thermometer T0 in a sidewall part corresponding to an operation level preplanned from properties and throughput of the material to be treated and is designed to always grasp the temperature of the operation level planned from the properties, throughput, etc., preset the upper limit temperature and the lower limit temperature permitted at the operation level, adjust the amount supplied of the raw material or the amount cut out of the charcoal so as to keep the measured temperature within the range of the upper limit temperature and the lower limit temperature permitted at the operation level and maintain the top surface level of the raw material layer in the vertical type self-combusting carbonization furnace 1 capable of combusting a part of the organic waste raw material charged from the upper part, carbonizing the part with heat of combustion thereof, producing a charcoal and cutting out the charcoal from the lower part.
