PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for monitoring the expression of a large majority of genes. SOLUTION: A method for monitoring a large majority of genes by using a cipher probe. Preferably, the cipher probe is fixed on a base board and forms a universal array. The universal array is suitable for monitoring the expression of almost all genes. In some operational modes, a sample is hybridized with the cipher probe and a nucleic acid which is derived from a transcript of a gene, by using a mediator probe.
