PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a drive unit for a stepping motor, which can perform initialization certainly and with good external appearance at low cost, a proper method concerned, and a stepping motor. SOLUTION: This drive unit supplies such a drive signal A that the rotating torque T, which is generated in the stepping motor when it supplies the motor with a specified range R<SB>1</SB>of drive signal A, may be smaller than the rotating torque T which is generated in the stepping motor when it supplies the motor with the residual phase range R<SB>2</SB>, at the time of initializing operation when it abuts a driven member interlocking with the rotation of the stepping motor against a stopper. The phase range R<SB>1</SB>includes a phase range where normal rotation torque is generated when it continues to supply a reverse drive signal A in condition that the driven member abuts on the above stopper, and the phase range R<SB>2</SB>, where larger rotating torque is generated, includes a phase range where reversing torque is generated.
