The generator has a chamber provided with two chamber parts (13, 15) defining an entrance side and an exit side of the generator. A gas supply device is arranged at the entrance side in the chamber part (13). A control unit and a supply unit are provided for controlling and supplying electrodes and frequency control units (61). One of the electrodes is arranged in the chamber part (15) at a distance to the exit side. A mantle of a chamber part is made of a high melting point metal e.g. tungsten. Magnets are arranged on an outer side of the chamber part.
