The invention relates to a surface sizing unit for a size press, in which a paper or cardboard web W is set to run through a roll nip N, which is formed by a pair of rolls 1, 2, and in which size films are spread out over the surface of the rolls 1, 2 of the pair of rolls by surface sizing units 10, 10a. In the roll nip N the size films are transferred to the paper or cardboard web W. The surface sizing units 10, 10a are provided with a coating element 21, which is fitted to a blade bar 11, which by means of adjusting spindles 26 is designed to be capable of loading against the surface of the roll 1,12 in the size press. The adjusting spindles 26 are arranged to act on the coating elements 21 or the supporting structure of the coating element by way of a fixed profiled strip 25 in the transverse direction of the machine. The blade bar 11 of at least one surface sizing unit 10 is mounted in the frame 4 of the size press for adjustment of the blade pressure by movement in a direction towards the roll 1 that deviates from the tangential plane of the contact position A between the coating element 21 and the surface of the roll 1. <IMAGE>
