Provided are a positive electrode active material for a rechargeable lithium battery and a rechargeable lithium battery including the same. The positive electrode active material for a rechargeable lithium battery includes a lithium nickel composite oxide that has an I_(003)/I_(104) of 0.92 to 1.02, the I_(003)/I_(104) being the ratio of a diffraction peak intensity I_(003) of a (003) surface attributable to X-ray diffraction to a diffraction peak intensity I_(104) of a (104) surface attributable to the X-ray diffraction. The lithium nickel composite oxide includes nickel-containing metal and lithium and at least 80 atomic percents of nickel is included with respect to a total atomic weight of the nickel-containing metal.
