An electrolyte for a fuel cell comprises a membrane containing a carrier or binder mixed with crystalline grains of an acid salt of a polybasic acid selected from phosphoric, vanadic, tungstic, phosphotungstic, molybdic and phosphomolybdic acids, and of a metal selected from titanium, zirconium, tin and niobium. The carrier or binder may be asbestos, polyethylene, a halogenated polyethylene or a polysiloxane. The electrolytic membrane may be interposed between two electrodes in a fuel cell. The crystalline grains preferably are prepared by size-reduction, for example to below 50 microns, of crystalline grains having a particle size of at least 1.5 millimetres. The crystalline grains either may be prepared by heating a compound of the metal with concentrated sulphuric acid until a clear solution is obtained, adding the polybasic acid in anhydrous form to the solution, and heating the resulting mixture to give a gel from which crystalline grains are recovered, or may be obtained by heating grains of the amorphous salt with an aqueous solution of sulphuric acid or nitric acid and of the polybasic acid from which the amorphous salt is derived; the above two methods are fully described and exemplified in Specification 1,070,932.
