961,763. Piecing-up yarns. MONSANTO CHEMICAL CO. Nov. 23, 1962 [Dec. 22, 1961], No. 44429/62. Heading D1W. Contiguous monofilament, multifilament, or staple nylon yarns in parallel relationship e.g. overlapping ends, are joined together by coating or impregnating the yarns with a multi-hydroxybenzene bonding agent and then heating the yarns by conduction, convection or radiation, optionally with applied pressure and/or positive cooling, to effect thermo-chemical union thereof. The agent may be resorcinol, hydroquinone, pyrocatechol, pyrogallol, applied e.g. by spraying, brushing, padding, or dipping the yarns individually or collectively, as a melt or a solution in water, alcohols such as methonol or ethanol, or ethers such as dimethyl or diethyl ether. As shown in Fig. 1, yarns 10 and 11 receive an application of binding solution 14 from a wick 16, they are then held, Fig. 2, on an electrically heated surface 23 of a slot 20 until the solvent has evaporated, and are cooled without disturbing the area of juncture 18. Surplus ends at 12 and 13 may be severed. |
