A petroleum fuel oil having a viscosity of 5-100 centistokes at 38 DEG C. and a specific gravity of 0.90-0.96 at 16 DEG C. is treated with a solvent so that all the wax present in the oil which consists of wax molecules having carbon numbers of 35 or more are removed whilst leaving in the oil all the wax molecules having carbon numbers less than 30. Solvents specified are methylene chloride, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone or mixtures thereof with an aromatic solvent e.g. benzene or toluene. Temperatures specified are those in the range 2-27 DEG C. The fuel oil may be a residual fuel oil obtained by blending distillation residues with lighter distillation fractions e.g. gas oil or kerosine, or fuel oils which have been subjected to a deasphalting treatment.
