[Also in Division G2] A rotatable rear view anti-dazzle vehicle mirror comprises a housing 11, Fig. 1, in which are arranged a plain glass double plate 1 and a mirror double plate 2 under pressure from a spring 12 and spaced from the plate 1, synthetic plastic lamination foils 3 welded at their periphery and providing a liquid space 5, and a liquid conduit 9 connected to a pump 17 which may pump light-absorbing liquid to and from the space between the plates 1, 2 to vary the reflecting quality of the mirror. The pump comprises a rigid part 30, and a flexible diaphragm 31 riveted at the edges thereto and which may be drawn away from the base 30 by pulling on a rod 34 attached to the diaphragm until a retaining plate 41 engages in a locking position in a groove 42 in the rod. In this retracted position liquid is withdrawn by suction from between the plates 1, 2, the mirror is undimmed, and the liquid passed into the pump. Occluded air within the tube 9 and pump may be expelled through a filler tube 27 after a plug 29 has between withdrawn and pinch clips 25, 26, 28 have been sequentially applied or removed to push the air upwardly. When the mirror is to be dimmed again to prevent dazzle, the knob 44 on the rod 34 is pushed downwardly against a spring 45, the plate 41 is removed from the groove 42 and the rod and diaphragm allowed to snap back to the position shown, thus forcing liquid from the pump back into the space between the plates 1 and 2. In a modification, Figs. 7 and 9 (not shown), the pump comprises a flexible tube which is compressed by a pivoted hand lever. In another embodiment, a pivotally mounted internal mirror, Fig. 3, has a pump 17 which may be compressed by a lever 51 attached thereto, and the mirror plate 2 is under pressure from a flat plate spring 12 (see also Figs. 4 and 5, not shown). An individual pump may operate several mirrors, and several sealing devices for the plates 1, 2, and the mirror housing are described and shown. |
