A continuous process for the preparation of formic acid comprises feeding a formate and sulphuric acid, with formic acid as a diluent into a reactor with the liquid maintained at a constant level and the cation of the formate forming a sulphate which is solid at 150 DEG C., and passing the liquid effluent to an evaporator whereby the formic acid is vaporized rapidly from a film on a stationary surface heated to from 100 DEG to 120 DEG C. An alkali metal formate, e.g. sodium formate is used and the reactor temperature regulated by a heat exchanger, e.g. at 35 DEG C., and the formic acid is a recycle stream, and the thin layer evaporator (see Division B1) is provided with a rotor. |
