A compound having bactericidal and fungicidal properties is produced by reacting a basic antibiotic with a halogen substituted phenol or a condensation product of a halogen substituted phenol in which the hydroxyl hydrogen of the phenol has been replaced by a radical having at least one acidic hydrogen atom. Specified antibiotics are neomycin, tetracycline, oxytetracycline, chlortetracycline, streptomycin and dihydrostreptomycin. The preferred halogenated phenol is pentachlorophenol and the preferred condensation product has the formula in which X represents a halogenated phenyl radical e.g. the condensation product of pentachlorophenol with salicylic acid or acetylsalicylic acid. The halogen substituted phenol may be condensed with other aromatic hydroxy-carboxylic acids or a functional derivative thereof, or with polycarboxylic acids such as phthalic acid. Typical compounds are neomycin pentachlorophenate, neomycin hexapentachlorophenate, neomycin tri-pentachlorophenate, streptomycin tri-pentachlorophenate, dihydrostreptomycin tri-pentachlorophenate, chlortetracycline mono-pentachlorophenate, tetracycline mono-pentachlorophenate and neomycin pentachlorophenyl salicylate. The compounds are used in the treatment of plant and animal diseases (see Group VI) and as an animal feed supplement (see Group I).ALSO:An animal feed supplement consists of the product produced by reacting a basic antibiotic with a halogen substituted phenol or a condensation product of a halogen substituted phenol in which the hydroxy hydrogen of the phenol has been replaced by a radical having at least one acidic hydrogen atom. Specified antibiotics are neomycin, tetracycline, oxytetracycline, chlortetracycline, streptomycin and dihydrostreptomycin. The preferred halogenated phenol is pentachlorophenol. A typical compound is neomycin pentachlorophenate.ALSO:A pharmaceutical or agricultural composition for the treatment of bacterial and mycocidal infections comprises a carrier and the product produced by reacting a basic antibiotic with a halogen substituted phenol or a condensation product of a halogen substituted phenol in which the hydroxy hydrogen of the phenol has been replaced by a radical having at least one acidic hydrogen atom. Specified antibiotics are neomycin, tetracycline, oxytetracycline, chlortetracycline, streptomycin and dihydrostreptomycin. The preferred halogenated phenol is pentachlorophenol. The composition may be used in the form of solutions, lotions, ointments, dips, sprays and dusting powders.
