A motor vehicle comprises a key-operable lock means 6 which is operated to lock the lever 4 of a gear selector assembly of an automatic or manual transmission in one position, the lever 4 being made of breakable material whereby a forcible attempt to move the lever from its locked position will result in the lever 4 being broken without appreciable damage to the gear selector assembly. In an embodiment, the gear selector structure 16 is rotatable within the steering column casing 1; and carries the pivotal selector lever 4 and (at its lower end) a control lever for an automatic transmission, and also carries the lock means 6 which comprises a plunger 15 engageable in an opening 10 in a flange 8 rigid with the casing 1. The flange 8 has notches 9 to retain the selector lever 4 in various gear positions. The lever 4 is locked by means 6 in " park " position, and the lock means 6 also functions as the ignition switch. In another embodiment, the steering column mounted gear lever of a manual transmission is locked in second or reverse gear, the opening being formed in the tube structure and the lock means being carried by a fixed casing. |
