[Also in Division B6] In a self-propelled truck for raising and rotatably supporting web rolls two chassis portions 13, 21 support a rotatable tube 26 to which two roll-engaging arms 2 are keyed, the arms being located between brackets 23 on the chassis portions, and the spacing between the two chassis portions is varied by means of a rotatable screw shaft 3, driven by an hydraulic motor 62, mounted on the chassis portion 13 and engaging a nut 58 secured to a bracket 57 on the arm 2 on the chassis portion 21. The arms are each luffed by an hydraulic ram 41 having a piston rod 43 pivoted to the corresponding chassis portion and a cylinder pivotally supported between the walls of the arm. The roll is supported by conical spindles 48 on shafts which are rotatably mounted on the arms 2 and which are provided with hydraulic brake mechanisms 4, Figs. 7, 8 (not shown), operated by a hand lever 143 to control unwinding of the roll. In operation, the arms 2 are moved apart and lowered, the roll is rolled between the arms, the truck is driven forward to engage spindle 48 with the coil. The chassis portion 21 is then moved rearwardly by operation of the hydraulic motor 62 to engage the other spindle 48 with the coil which is then raised by extension of the rams 48. Photo-electric cells are provided to align the truck with the machine to which the web is to be fed. The chassis portion 13 may be moved laterally with respect to the driven wheels 16 by a screw and nut mechanism operated by a lever 174. In a modification, Fig. 16 (not shown), the distance between the arms 2 is varied by a screw and nut mechanism which connects the chassis portions directly. |
