The invention comprises a process for making polyazo dyes containing at least three water-solubilising groups, defined as sulphonic and carboxylic acid groups, and having the formula R-N=N-M-N=N-R2-NH.R1(Hal)n where R1 is an aliphatic acyl or cyanuric residue, R2 is a benzene or naphthalene residue, R3 is a benzene or naphthalene residue which may have the group NH.R1(Hal)n, n is 1, 2 or 3 and M is the residue of a dis- or poly-azo dye which has at least one water-solubilizing group and which is capable of reacting in two positions with diazo compounds, by coupling a component M of formula B1-N=N-A-N=N-B2 where A is the residue of a tetrazotisable diamine of the benzene, diphenyl, stilbene, naphthalene or heterocyclic series, B1 and B2 are residues of coupling components, capable of coupling twice, and which may contain azo groups, of the benzene, naphthalene or heterocyclic series, with two mols of a diazo compound bearing the NH.R1(Hal)n group, or one mol each of two different diazo compounds of the benzene or naphthalene series, of which at least one has an NH.R1(Hal)n group. The dyes may also be made by treating a dye of formula R3-N=N-M-N=N-R2.NH2 with a halogen-carboxylic acid halide or anhydride, with a halogenoalkylsulphohalide or cyanuric halide. A may be composed of rings which may be joined by bridge members such as (where R is H, alkyl, aryl or a member of a ring system) or -N=N-. B1 and B2 may be residues of hydroxy, dihydroxy, aminohydroxy or diamino compounds. A, B1 and B2 may contain substituents such as methyl, methoxy, nitro and halogen groups. Representative of indicated components corresponding to M are where X is OH or , Z is CH3, OCH3, Cl, SO3H, COOH or NO2 and Y is H, CH3, C2H5, C3H7, C4H9 or OCH3. The dyes colour cellulosic materials especially when used in conjunction with steaming and acid-binding agents. Brown, black, grey and olive shades are obtained. Examples are provided of the preparation of the dyes and their use in colouring cotton. The dyes obtained range from tetrato hexa-kis. Representative of end components used are 1-amino- 3-b - chloropropionylaminobenzene-6-sulphonic acid and the condensation product of cyanuric chloride with 1,3-diaminobenzene-4-sulphonic acid and acylating agents used are b -bromo-, a ,b -dichloro- and a ,b ,b -trichloro-propionic acid chlorides and cyanuric chloride.
