[Also in Division H5] A resistance heater for welding non-conductive films comprises a heater band on a large support designed to cool the band rapidly between heating current impulses. As shown, the band 3 is clamped to a metal block 1, and is insulated therefrom by aluminium oxide, glass or ceramic sprayed on to the head 2 of the block or the underside of the band, or the block may be of aluminium and anodized. Alternatively, the band may comprise a conductive film applied to a non-conductive strip. The head 2 may be grooved to produce a narrow strip at a higher temperature and there may be a channel 9 for cooling fluid. |
