1,154,146. Slip casting composition. CORNING GLASS WORKS. 4 July, 1966 [13 July, 1965], No. 29945/66. Headings C1A. C1J and C1M. A slip-casting composition for forming inorganic articles comprises an aqueous latex emulsion containing a dispersing agent and 70-83% by wt. of a non-hygroscopic particulate glass or ceramic material. The material may be a borosiloxate, soda-lime silicate or lead silicate glass, alumina, forsterite, steatite, ZrO 2 , UO 2 , BeO or mixtures thereof, preferably finely ground. The latex emulsion preferably comprises a styrene/butadiene co-polymer. Various non-ionic, anionic and cationic surfactants may be used in the emulsion. A thickening agent such as a 2% solution of hydroxyethyl cellulose may be present. The non- ceramic components completely volatilize during firing without appreciable shrinkage of the fired article. Examples describe the preparation of alumina articles. Glass sheets can be cast.
