Novel 4 - substituted - 19 - nor - A - homosteroid - #<SP>2,4a,10(1)</SP>-trienes, the 4 - substituent being a group of the structure R 1 -N= in which R 1 is a free or esterified OH group or a substituted NH 2 group, are prepared by reacting the corresponding 3-substituted-#<SP>1,4</SP>-steroiddienes containing in the 10-position a reactive esterified OH group with a strong base. In the products a ketalized oxo group may be hydrolysed as may an esterified or etherified hydroxyl group, a 17-keto group may be reduced to the #-OH group possibly with simultaneous introduction in the α-position of a lower aliphatic hydrocarbon radical and/or an OH group may be esterified or etherified. The starting materials may be prepared in situ from the corresponding 3-keto-#<SP>1,4</SP>-dienes and appropriate reagents, i.e. hydroxylamine or an ester thereof or a substituted hydrazine. The A-homo-steroids of the invention, which are stated to be active against inflammation and tumours and to lower blood cholesterol level, may be made up into pharmaceutical compositions with suitable carriers. |
